The Conditions & Style of the Southwest…

Southwestern golf is full of condition changes and course adjustments that require the up most attention from course maintenance crews. Constantly changing weather and temperatures create a challenge for courses around the southwest. Especially in the summer months when golf courses go through a period of climate change which is known as transition. This period is when the winter Rye grass dies off and the dormant Bermuda grass is replenished from the heat of the summer. During these times, courses typically see bare spots and rugged terrain on the greens. Although, this does alter the conditions of the course it is not unpleasant by any means. Creating easy running fairways and lower length rough, some perceive the courses as easier played in the summer months. The distance is shortened with rolling fairways and the heat creates longer ball flights with the warmer air. The conditions of the golf in the southwest vary so much that each course and each month of the year will offer something different to see, it is rare that one will play the same course in the exact same condition as they did a month prior. This creates a special style of the game and requires a more creative approach to the shots at hand. Whether it be a low runners in the winter to a high fade in the summer, southwest golf is something to experience if you are getting used to the same old style and layouts mostly found in the Midwest. The Pointe Lookout Mountain at Tapatio Cliffs

I am part of the golf staff here at Sonoran Suites and I would like to tell you about a great course that we offer. It is called the Pointe Lookout Mountain at Tapatio Cliffs. This course plays through a beautiful little mountain range in north Phoenix. You will experience elevation changes and some tight desert play. One of the neatest holes on this course is the tenth; it has a dramatic elevation drop right off the tee box down to a tight little fairway that slopes to the right. If you haven’t placed the ball correctly off the tee you’re in trouble. To the left is desert; to the right is a small amount of relief then more desert. If you’re short desert, but if you have solid connection you’ll end up in perfect shape and don’t be scared to go long because you will be right in front of the green. Once you get to the green look to the middle otherwise there is severe sloping to the front, back and right side. All in all, this course is a ton of fun; just don’t play outside of your personal game just play the course. Keep the ball in play, and get to the southwest for an unforgettable golf experience.
